The Histiocytosis program at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College consists of a multidisciplinary team focused on the diagnosis and treatment of histiocytic disorders in children and adolescents. Our physicians participate in national and international committees on diagnosis and management of these rare disorders. This program also focuses on the education of students, residents, and fellows who will participate in clinical and laboratory research of the new and innovative protocols for the treatment of histiocytosis.
Diseases:
Histiocytic disorders are a group of diseases that occur when there is an overproduction of histiocytes or mononuclear phagocytic cells of bone marrow origin. Overproduction of these cells can lead to organ damage and cause disease, based on the type of the cells involved. Correct and complete pathologic diagnosis is essential because the different diseases require different treatment approaches. We focus on the following:
- Dendritic cell disorders, including Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), Juvenile Xanthogranuloma (JXG) and Erdheim Chester Disease (ECD)
- Macrophage cell disorders, including Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and Rosai-Dorfman Disease (RD)
- Malignant histiocytosis, including certain kinds of leukemia and malignant tumors
Unique Features:
- Innovative therapy treatment protocols
- Outpatient Infusion Center for patients treated for histiocytosis
- Multidisciplinary services of the pediatric surgery, pathology and radiation medicine for children and adolescents with histiocytic disorders
- Team of stem cell transplantation specialists
