The Infusion Center of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation is located at 19 Bradhurst Avenue, Suite: S-800, Hawthorne, NY 10532.

The center is staffed by board-certified physicians, highly skilled nurses, medical assistants, nursing aids, social workers and secretaries who provide a welcoming environment and treatment for infants, children, adolescent and young adults with malignant tumors, hematologic malignancies, congenital immunodeficiency disorders, inborn errors of metabolism and those who have undergone stem cell transplants for these disorders. Our priority at the center is to provide a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere to our patients while they receive infusion therapies.

 

The Infusion Center is equipped with comfortable chairs, TVs, books, magazines and toys which the patients have an easy access during their treatment. Patients receive their therapies after they are seen by the physicians. Our services include chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody, gammaglobulin, steroid, antibiotics and growth factor administrations as well as intravenous hydration.  We also provide services for patients with sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies, as well as for patients with thrombotic and bleeding disorders. Our infusion center meets the medical needs of over 2500 patient-visits per year while delivering high quality medical care.

These offices provide consultations for children with hematologic and oncological disorders.

Our goal is to improve the health and quality of life for children who reside in the Hudson Valley region of New York state.  Our mission is to provide affordable, high-quality care to promote wellness, in a patient-friendly atmosphere.

Our physicians specialize in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, solid tumors, bone marrow failure syndromes, congenital immune deficiency disorders, histiocytosis, bleeding disorders, and hematological problems including various forms of anemias, platelet and neutrophil disorders.  Same day consultations are available based on the urgency of the health problems of children.

Patients who are seen in these offices have the opportunity to be evaluated by other subspecialists as required. Their diagnostic work up, the blood tests and radiological studies are done at the laboratory and radiology offices on premises.

The ambulatory surgery department is located in the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, where we perform bone marrow biopsies and aspirates, lumbar punctures, and administer intrathecal chemotherapy.  There is a dedicated procedure room for our patients staffed by pediatric-trained anesthesiologists, OR nurses, hematology/oncology physicians and fellows, and a nurse practitioner.  The post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses are all chemotherapy-certified and administer IV chemotherapy to our patients.

 

The Hematotherapy Program at the Westchester Medical Center is a full-service Apheresis and Infusion Center providing care to patients of all ages throughout the Hudson Valley region in New York State. The newly-renovated, kid-friendly outpatient Center has individual patient bays for comfort and privacy, and are furnished with flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi.  We also provide inpatient services for the adult patients at Westchester Medical Center and for children, adolescents and young adults receiving care at the World Class Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at the Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College.

Our physicians and nursing specialists are trained in many subspecialties including: pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, transfusion medicine, apheresis and blood banking. Hematology and Oncology residents and fellows also benefit from professional training in these disciplines. The Hematotherapy nurses are proficient in many apheresis platforms and provide compassionate and quality-driven care to our patients. Members of the staff are involved in related clinical, translational and basic research and protocols for childhood cancers and other hematological diagnoses.

Diseases:

The Hematotherapy Program offers consultation for many types of apheresis, including:

• Therapeutic plasma exchange, to treat hematologic disorders and autoimmune disorders, or to remove antibodies in patients who receive organ transplants
• Peripheral stem cell collection, autologous or allogeneic, for the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, certain pediatric solid tumor cancers, and sickle cell disease
• Red cell exchange, for patients with acute or chronic complications of sickle cell disease, or patients with other, select conditions
• Extracorporeal photopheresis, a treatment for patients with acute or chronic graft versus host disease after stem cell transplant, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, or for patients with rejection after solid organ transplant
• Additionally, procedures such as leukapheresis and plateletpheresis reduce very high white counts or platelet counts, respectively, to treat patients with these conditions

The Infusion area of the Center is equipped to transfuse blood components and infuse blood product derivatives and medications such as:

• Routine red blood cell or platelet infusions for outpatients with cancer and other diseases
• Factor infusions, such as fibrinogen or other concentrates
• Therapeutic phlebotomy for conditions such as hemochromatosis or polycythemia vera

Physicians overseeing the Hematotherapy Program are available for consultation 24 hours to all Westchester Medical Center clinical services with patients who may be candidates for these procedures. We welcome consultations from clinics and hospitals outside our Westchester family of hospitals in order to provide the best care possible to all patients.
